Avatar Rated: S & MS * * * *
Directed by James Cameron and taking over a decade to create, Avatar had to be awesome. There was so much going for it, and so much hype that the movie had as much potential to fail horribly than to be one of the best movies ever. The movie harnessed all of the latest CGI and it went extremely well. Although there were a few crucial flaws with the movie, it was good for the most part. Lets dive into the story of the movie.
Basically, the main character is a marine on another planet. You need to kill off all of the residents of the planet and harvest an extremely expensive mineral. When he takes part in a project to turn into one of the natives through an artificially manufactured body. While exploring the planet, the protagonist realizes the natives are not that bad, in fact, the invading humans are the bad ones. Throughout the middle of the movie, he tries defending the aliens and trying not to hurt any humans. In the end, there is a huge battle between every species of alien and the humans. Who wins? What happens to our human protagonist? Go watch to find out!
The movie is obviously an amazing, exciting movie. The CGI, the plot, and the acting all falls into place to create something amazing. However, it is very, very, VERY long. It seems, after you watch it, that the movie was too long but it needed to be that long to fit in everything. Cameron could have easily shortened it down at least a half a hour, then again, it seemed about an hour too long. I think the time limit was the only mistake, and that is remarkable, since it is a wicked long movie and there are no mistakes other than time itself. If you have not seen it, take a night, take a mate, and take a lot of popcorn because you have to see this movie.
The Hangover Part 2 Rated S * * *
The Hangover Part 2 is a sequel to the hilarious smash hit of The Hangover. Upon release, it was a bit overhyped. People thought it would be a huge improvement to the first movie, but I just kept thinking the same thing. "What could it be about? Another hangover? That is way too similar to the first one." And guess what, it was about another hangover! The first movie was hard to anticipate the story, but the second was was highly predictable, plus the setting was very questionable. There was a lot of room for error and a lot of hype. This movie quite possibly could be an absolute disaster.
In this movie, Stu is getting married to his Asian wife. They go to Bangkok to get married but the party goes wrong. Allen, yet again, drugs everybody with a drug that makes them forget everything. This time, though, he did not mean to drug everyone, he just wanted to drug a man named Teddy, Stu's wife's father, because he kept making fun of him. They all wake up, except for Doug, in a hotel room. They also find a crazy asian man from the last movie, only this time, he is friendly. Basically, they all just try to find Doug, find out what happened, and get back for the wedding. They wind up getting into a ton of trouble with an Asian gang, but it turns out the whole thing was an FBI sting to take down the gang leader. They eventually find Doug in an elevator and they get back for the wedding.
The movie was not as funny as the first one was. It was extremely repetitive to the first movie and it takes place in a much worse place. Although Bangkok is funny because of the name, a lot of people could not make the connection that they did with Vegas because a lot of people have gone to Vegas, especially for a boys last night out being a bachelor. The movie also had the same ending by looking at extremely inappropriate pictures, but this was one of the funniest parts of the movie. The movie has many very funny points, but it just does not have the same flare as the first one. Overall, the Hangover 2 is a great movie to see if you liked the first one, but critics of the first movie will not like it at all.
